Inherit email notification?

Short question:

Is there a simple way to inherit the email notification to sub-folders?
It is very strenuous to activate it for every sub-folder.
Or did I miss an easier way? We are using version 1.7.2 right now. Are there any changes in the newer versions in this respect?

Has anyone an idea how to do this efficiently?
Do I really have to set it up manually for all my 167 folders and sub-folders?

If so, this would by a strong feature request for me.
If the access to folders can be inherited why not the email notification?
